Exploring the Tuamotu atolls by cruise is the most natural and accessible way to discover this remote archipelago.
These atolls are close enough to one another for beautiful, often easy passages. Once inside the lagoon, the reef creates calm waters—like a lake—ideal for life on board.
In this authentic archipelago, still protected from mass tourism, a boat is sometimes the only way to explore these lost gems.

Days 1–3 — Fakarava

Board in Fakarava and stroll through the pretty village of Rotoava, your first taste of the Paumotu atmosphere. Sail across the lagoon to the atoll's south-eastern tip and discover a paradisiacal anchorage that immediately invites you to slow down… time has become a rare commodity, but the Paumotu seem to have an unlimited supply. You have reached the end of the world, outside time, and it feels wonderful! Ready for an emotional highlight? After a few miles, we will anchor near the southern pass at Tetamanu… snorkelling or diving, you will not miss the famous shark wall: there are so many sharks that they seem to form a wall…
Grey sharks, blacktip and whitetip sharks are joined by humphead wrasse, every kind of parrotfish in every colour—in short, a multitude of fish to observe in a giant aquarium that will make you want to linger in the water for hours.
Days 4–7 — Kauehi

Set a course for Kauehi, reached after a beautiful half-day passage. Sailing is usually comfortable on a broad reach. Let us tell you straight away: Kauehi is a treasure, and quite well kept…
This is a promise of a unique encounter with the islanders… we spent almost a year here during lockdown, so naturally we formed special bonds that we love to share. Depending on your wishes, you can try fishing, spearfishing in the lagoon or outside the reef for larger game, learn to cook Paumotu food and/or weave your own niau hat (made from coconut leaves), or try Patia fa, an ancestral sport that is still widely practised. Hikes let you observe the ocean and lagoon at the same time—fabulous!
If big-game fishing appeals to you, it can be arranged. And if you come back empty-handed, with a little luck you may taste kaveu (coconut crab)… for some, that is the ultimate highlight.
Days 8–10 — Toau

After a half-day downwind passage, we stop at Toau, a wild atoll with very few inhabitants (between 5 and 10 depending on the season). It feels like a Robinson Crusoe adventure, and it is not unusual to be the only boat at anchor. Because the atoll is rarely visited, the snorkelling is even richer. Its hoa, passages between two motu (islets), are spectacularly beautiful. Without a doubt, this is another place that will drain your camera battery. Return to Fakarava through the northern pass.
*This cruise itinerary is also perfect for kitesurfing and wing-foiling enthusiasts. Incredible spots, especially around Fakarava and Tahanea, are close to our favourite anchorages.

If you have 4–5 extra days between Fakarava and Kauehi, we will visit Tahanea, an uninhabited atoll. Here, the expression “in the middle of nowhere” takes on its full meaning. It was in Tahanea that our children learned to play Koh-Lanta. With people leaving nature more to itself, marine life is abundant. We had an absolutely fabulous time aboard Na Maka with Nathalie, Jérôme, and their son Titouan. We sailed through a paradise setting before stopping on Kauehi Island. Thanks to Nathalie and Jérôme, we were able to meet the island's inhabitants, who welcomed us warmly and shared their lives with us for a few weeks. These memories will remain with us forever. We cannot wait to take another route with the Na Maka crew and continue discovering Polynesia! Our hosts have an excellent knowledge of the places they showed us in complete safety. Thanks to them, we discovered Polynesian culture, snorkelling, and magnificent seabeds, which made a deep impression on us. A thousand thanks to Jérôme, Nathalie, and Titouan!
Wonderful holidays. Jérôme and Nathalie know the best anchorages perfectly, making it possible to enjoy an exceptional Polynesian experience. We chose 20 days in the Tuamotus (Fakarava, Toau, and Kauhei). We loved discovering the seabed: multicoloured coral reefs and marine life whose diversity was incredible—the world of Nemo, but even better; even the sharks (peaceful...) were everywhere at every swim...!! Meeting the lovely, caring, and incredibly friendly people of Kauhei was a truly memorable experience. Life there is shaped by the weekly air link and the cargo ship that supplies the inhabitants every 15 days. A timeless escape if ever there was one. And then there was Namaka, which welcomed us throughout these wonderful days. It was very comfortable and reassuring when the sea grew rough outside the lagoons. Our hosts handled everything with confidence, mastering their subject with sailing CVs worthy of the greatest sailors. Life on board is cosy, the food is excellent, and the pace is gentle. We had a wonderful holiday!

As always, Nathalie and Jérôme were very welcoming hosts. They took us to discover different snorkeling spots, where we were able to admire many species of fish and even saw manta rays along the way.
We also had the opportunity to go cycling and share a brunch with the locals.
The meals were very generous and well prepared, and the boat was very comfortable.
The days went by so quickly because there was always something to do.
I will definitely come back, and I highly recommend an excursion aboard Namaka!
